Mildred has a Type A personality in the classical sense, unafraid to fight for what she wants. But in her case, the A in “Type A” could stand for many things.
It could stand for Admirable, because she made it through a very difficult time at a very young age. Born in Czechoslovakia, when Mildred was 6, the Germans invaded and her family fled. They emigrated to the United States, found their feet in Pennsylvania, and Mildred soon entered Kindergarten, even though she spoke no English. She learned quickly and wanted to achieve big things.
It could stand for Ambitious, because even though her father said women could only be a teacher, a nurse, or a secretary, she was determined to be more. Mildred followed her father’s wishes and started as secretary for an interior designer, but soon moved up the ranks to become the President of Contract Marketing Division.
Perhaps the “A” is for Adventurous, because that job sent her not only all over the United States, but across the world, traveling to 26 different countries with her husband, the love of her life. And also because together they had five children in nine years, a daring pursuit.
The “A” could be for Active, because she’s always been involved in her community, presiding over committees and dedicating her time to community causes. Now Mildred’s a very young 91 years of age and exercises regularly, taking advantage of Fit Cardio, Barre, and other fitness classes.
Or even Appreciative, because her Type A personality has taken her far, and because she’s content exactly where she is.
“I’ve worked very hard my whole life, but it’s been fun, too,” said Mildred. “Life is good. I’m having a great time and I’ve enjoyed every minute. And that’s fantastic.”
